The First Chakra

2nd ChakraThe Sanskrit name for the Sacral (Second) Chakra is Svadhisthana, meaning “sweetness”, and its associations are indeed what makes life sweet – pleasure, sexuality, nurture, movement, and change. Its Hindu symbol is a six-petalled lotus containing a white circle, symbolizing the element of Water, and a light-blue crescent Moon within which is a “makara”, whose fishtail coils like the Kundalini. This water creature represents sexual desires and passions – a danger only when ignored or repressed.

Water is the sacral element, its fluidity corresponding with the bladder, circulatory system, sexual and reproductive organs, The Sacral Chakra resonates to the color orange and, positioned near the female reproductive organs (approximately two inches below the naval) is associated with nurture, receptivity, and emotions. The Moon also relates to creativity, the energy that shifts humankind from survival to nourishing the soul: from survival we have traveled upward to the “pleasure principle”.

The Sacral Chakra leads us from basic existence to help us embrace what makes life worth living. There is a duality in this chakra, which is why the Moon is a crescent, representing visible light and darkness. This is the tribal energy of the Root split into opposing yin/yang, suggesting the need to evolve beyond the group to establish one’s “self”.

When this chakra is too open or spins too fast we will be emotionally unbalanced, a fantasist, manipulative, sexually addictive, martyr or “poor me” behavior. When it is blocked or the chakra spins sluggishly or not at all we experience over sensitivity, being hard of ourselves, feeling guilty for no reason, frigidity or impotency.

Questions for the Second Chakra:

In order to help decide the health of your second chakra, ask yourself the following questions.

  1. How well to I manage change? Can I easily do something different or in a different way?
  2. Am I comfortable with my sexuality? Do I enjoy being a woman or a man?
  3. Am I using my creative skills?
  4. Does money flow gracefully and abundantly in my life?
  5. Are my desires easily realized and accepted?

Affirmations:

  1. Life is unfolding as it should. Sex is something sacred. Without it, the species would die out in 100 years. It is meant to be enjoyed.
  2. My thoughts create my experience 100% of the time. Abundance is my birthright.
  3. Change makes life fresh and juicy. I will do something differently today.
